Challenger Spark 54

Howdy!  Posting some pictures of my old XL in new Challenger Designs Spark 54.   I hesitated to order one of these because they are rarely discussed and few pictures seem to exist out there (at least as far as I could find).

I wanted a table/cart that's not wood, not shiny stainless, and not four figures in price.  This is the only option I've found.  It's pretty light until you put the egg in place, then all seems fine.

Purchased from Premier Grilling in Carrolton Tx (first transaction with them, Drew in shipping was great to deal with), and shipped all the way to Lake Ontario.

Egg is sitting directly on the frame.   If it melts, I'll let you know.

Hope this helps anyone else investigating these.

Yesterday I got to cook in my first egg fest. It was a blast. Other than a couple little pop up thunderstorms everything went off with out a hitch. Got some great positive feed back from the 200 attendees. Can’t wait to do it again.

Large BGE Table Free to a good home

i finally moved my large egg from it’s old home to it’s new Modular Nest.  My old table, built to normal egg table standards using treated lumber and Trex decking, is available for free to a good home.  Complete with bricks, but, not the granite insert.  Located in Palmyra, VA. Use remove by yourself with 48 hours.

My new table

Pics of my table that I just completed.  First, some background. I never planned to buy a BGE; it was never on my radar. I was on an email list from a bbq store near Lancaster PA, around four hours from where I live; less than a hour from my moms. I was visiting my mother, nothing was going on that Saturday, and the store was having an Eggfest. I saw 'free bbq food', so I went. Needless to say, I was blown away by the BGE, and versatility of it, and I needed one. Someone there mentioned that the units are brand new, used one time, then sold at discount. There were all sold; so I told the gentleman to put me on the waiting list; if anyone doesn't pay timely I will buy one. Two weeks later I rcvd a call, and was asked if I was still interested. I paid at the moment, and the next month went to go pick it up, fully assembled. Sweet deal.

Poking around this sight and others, I saw all the beautiful tables that were made, and I had to have one. So I patently waited for the right deal on a piece of granite. Over the winter I procured a 3x5 piece of granite for $100 from CL. There was a hole for an umbrella in the center. I took it to the local granite shop and got the 21" hole cut, at the edge of the  umbrella hole for $100. The disk that was removed was cleaned up, and I use it as a heat shield under the table nest. I built a cardboard template of the complete granite, and just winged my plans from there, using a picture of a egg table as a general reference. I've never built anything like this before. My neighbor has a wood shop and tools that I used for the initial build of the frame. Enjoy the pictures. And does anyone have any recommendation for a cover?  This won't get rained on, but I'd like to keep it clean.

Finished product:

The drawer just slides on a piece of pressure treated lumber that I screwed down.

I am interested in building a simple table for a LBGE. I want to use aluminum angle iron for the frame because it can be bolted together fairly straight-forwardly.

Anyone have any plans that might work or could be modified?

Best Table Top Material?

I just rounded out our BGE family yesterday with a new Medium.  The Medium and XL stay home while the Mini Max goes to our marina on Lake Michigan during the boating season.

My table has gone through a few different versions.  I originally built it with a cedar plank table top, but I wasn't satisfied with it.  The wood top was replaced by marine-grade plywood with tile.  That worked for 2 or 3 years, but now I have multiple tiles that have come off.  Time to change up the table top again.  (And re-stain the rest of the table.)

I have talked with a guy who says he can get me granite for $300.  Is granite a good material for a BGE table?  Will it get ridiculously hot in the summer sun?

What's everyone's recommendation?

Hey all...going to take the plunge and buy a MM to go with my large BGE.  The large is currently in a nest.  I'd like to purchase a table that will fit both.  Considering the modular nest units.  Any other suggestions other than the modular?

Thanks in advance!

Built an altar for my XLBGE

Well, i finally got my own BGE and after a few beers, thought, why don't i build a table to dress up the patio?  cannot be that difficult or take too long.....  Well, guess you know how that turned out.

The table houses my XLBGE and a 500 series Napoleon to warm the plates.  The table is 90" long by 35' deep and was constructed in two parts.  The base is framed in pressure treated 2X4s supported by 6 4X4 posts and decked in 3/4 plywood.  Each drawer is 32X30X8" to hold the tools and charcoal.  The upper structure is built on 2 sheets of 3/4" glued together and topped with a sheet of 1/2 concrete board to act as a thermal break.  The framing was done with 18 Gauge steel studs and the whole thing was covered in 1/2" concrete board with two layers for the table top.  The whole upper portion was tiled top to bottom to dress it up and i put in an electric box for my Looft fire starter (not necessary but what a great toy to light up with). The egg is on two layers of patio stone to get the height just right.

This great idea took a bit of time and really wasn't that difficult.  We're very happy with the result even though the whole unit complete weighs in at about 1100 lbs so its pretty tough to move around.

I added a couple of pictures to illustrate the build and the final product.

Just got approved, and I have a table question...

Hello everyone,
Been lurking a while, just got approved today. I've got an XL Egg and I've vowed I'm going to use it a lot more. So far I've done bacon, ribs, and a pork butt, as well as steaks, burgers etc..
I've had the egg two years or more. Last winter the gasket came off. So I went to a local dealer and got I new gasket, and saw the tables. Now, I'm sure the dealer I got mine from sold tables (he has since gone KJ) but I couldn't have looked at them then and remained married.
Open table designs would still require me to schlep things in and out. Nothing as tasty as a grill brush can be left were the younger dog can reach. Any of the cabinets you see online are a fortune to get to CT. And I don't have the tools or the skill to make my own.
I found a local guy who for a little more than a cypress table shipped from GA or MS will make one custom out of IPE. Seems like a no brainer to me.

To my question, what is the distance from the top top the table to the top of the shelf the egg sits on? Big Green egg, in their plans, calls this dimension "A" and it's 12.5.  But their own acacia table for the XL measures 13.625.   I will use a nest with fire brick or tile below the nest.

Comments? Thoughts? Answers?

First posted here about a month ago and was finishing up my table. Several of you eggheads wanted to see a picture, so here it is. Been working off and on on this table for about eight months (yeah - I know i''m slow).

I searched on the Internet for a picture of a table that I liked. I didn't have a plan but the end result looks pretty much like the picture I found. It is made of cypress and I included a granite insert on the top and also have the egg stand resting on a similar piece of granite.

I am am going to perform my first cook this weekend. Will try a pork butt.

Which shelves to buy?

Thinking I should finally buy some shelves. Any recommendations between the mahogany and composite ones? The former is more expensive but look nicer.

One day - maybe in 4 or so years, I plan to remodel my kitchen and garden so will probably get the BGE built into an outdoor kitchen but would be damn handy to have shelves in the meantime.

Has anyone done a square "hole" for an XL table?

My husband and I are about to build our XL BGE table tomorrow. Quick question as I firm up the plans: has anyone ever done a square hole for the Egg in the top shelf?  We don't have a band saw or  router to make it round and wondered if that would work,  with a square the size of the hole needed?   Thank you!

Smoking Temperature

We had a farm in...not Africa but Florida. My father built a smoker from a commercial freezer and we enjoyed fantastic chicken/fish/pork/turkey and sometimes not often beef - he was not a fan of brisket. By removing the middle stantion he could do as many as 10(!!!) turkeys at the same time as Christmas presents, usually however a turkey a mess of fish   some pork were more than enough. He never used a thermometer only his experience meaning for most large cuts of poultry/meat resulted in an all night stand where his only timer/thermometer was a bottle of Wild Turkey - finish the bottle smoking is done. Obviously he was at a very low temperature for a long long time. I am thinking of a 5-6 pound rack of pork say 190F/90C wanting an internal 145F/62C Any ideas about time?
